About the Smarter Balanced

Oregon's statewide math test is the Smarter Balanced summative. The older OAKS brand (Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) still appears in some district documents, but OAKS as a math assessment was retired in 2014-15 when Oregon joined Smarter Balanced; OAKS now refers only to the Oregon-built science test (until WCAS-style items roll out fully) and the Extended Assessment. The Oregon Department of Education administers Smarter Balanced math to grades 3 through 8 plus grade 11 using the consortium's CAT-plus-performance-task engine and the 2000-3000 vertical scale.

Oregon's testing window is one of the longest in the country — roughly mid-March through mid-June — which gives districts flexibility around the state's varied school calendars. ODE renames the four SBAC levels to Does Not Yet Meet, Nearly Meets, Meets, and Exceeds, with Level 3 (Meets) as the federal accountability bar. Aggregate results are published every fall on the Oregon At-A-Glance school profiles and the ODE Public Reports site, broken out by school, district, grade, and subgroup. Family score reports are mailed home through the district in the early fall.
