STAAR Math Practice
State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. STAAR uses Texas's state-specific standards. Briveli's curriculum is Common Core aligned, which covers the underlying math content tested.
Spring (April-May)
Computer-based
Calculators are not allowed on STAAR math grades 3-7. Grade 8 students get an on-screen graphing calculator tool on the entire test. Grades 3-7 do receive a state-issued reference materials page with formulas.

About the STAAR
STAAR is the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, the annual summative test administered to all Texas public-school students in grades 3-8 for math. STAAR is built directly on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, which is a Texas-specific standards framework rather than Common Core. The TEKS math standards overlap substantially with Common Core for K-8 content - place value, fractions, ratios, proportional reasoning, expressions, equations, and geometry are all there - but use different domain naming (Number and Operations, Algebraic Reasoning, Geometry and Measurement, Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy). Briveli's Common Core practice covers most of the underlying math, with TEKS-specific items in the personal financial literacy strand layered on top.
STAAR underwent a major redesign starting in 2022-23 and went fully online for nearly all students in 2023, ending decades of paper administration except for accommodation cases. The redesigned STAAR replaced most multiple-choice items with a mix of equation editor, multi-select, drag-and-drop, hot-spot, fill-in-the-blank, and short constructed-response items. Each grade's math test is one untimed session capped at four hours, and the Texas Education Agency publishes annual released test forms, item samplers, and the STAAR Math Reference Materials handout - which students may use during the test - on the TEA website.
STAAR math reports four performance levels: Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, and Masters Grade Level. Meets is the state's on-track-for-college benchmark and the level Texas uses in its A-F school accountability ratings. Masters indicates strong likelihood of college-level success without remediation. STAAR results feed the state's accountability system and, in some districts, are used in promotion decisions for grades 5 and 8. Families preparing for STAAR should focus practice on Readiness Standards - the TEKS expectations TEA flags as priority content - which make up the majority of STAAR points.

STAAR FAQ
Is STAAR aligned to Common Core?+
No. STAAR is aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), Texas's own standards. The TEKS math content for K-8 overlaps substantially with Common Core, so Common Core practice covers most of what is tested - but TEKS uses different domain names and includes personal financial literacy strands not in Common Core.
Is STAAR online or paper?+
STAAR went fully online in 2023 for nearly all students. Paper testing is now only available as an approved accommodation. The online test includes technology-enhanced item types like equation editor and drag-and-drop.
What does Meets Grade Level mean on STAAR?+
Meets Grade Level is the third of four STAAR performance levels and is the state's on-track-for-college benchmark. The four levels are Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, and Masters Grade Level.
