CAASPP Math Practice

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. CAASPP is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for math, which Briveli covers comprehensively.

Test window

A 12-week window selected by each district, typically running from early March through the last day of school

Format

Computer-adaptive

Calculator

No calculator on the computer-adaptive test in grades 3-5. Grades 6-8 have an embedded calculator on the calculator-allowed segment of the CAT and on most performance-task items (four-function in grade 6, scientific in grades 7-8). The non-calculator portion enforces the policy by hiding the tool.

Score scale

Four achievement levels: Standard Not Met, Standard Nearly Met, Standard Met, Standard Exceeded

About the CAASPP

California's CAASPP math test is the Smarter Balanced summative assessment as licensed by the state, given to every student in grades 3 through 8 plus grade 11. The math portion is fully computer-adaptive: each student sees a roughly 40-item CAT plus one performance task, and the difficulty adjusts to their responses so the final score reflects a tighter range than a fixed-form test. California sets its own 12-week local testing window — districts can start as early as the day after 66 percent of the year is complete — which is one of the longest windows of any Smarter Balanced state.

CAASPP scores are reported on the standard Smarter Balanced 2000-3000 scale and bucket students into four achievement levels: Standard Not Met, Standard Nearly Met, Standard Met, and Standard Exceeded. Aggregate results are published every fall on the public CAASPP & ELPAC Reporting site (caaspp-elpac.cde.ca.gov), which exposes school-, district-, and state-level math scores by grade and by claim (Concepts & Procedures, Problem Solving & Modeling, and Communicating Reasoning). Family score reports are mailed by districts and include the achievement level, the scale score, and per-claim diagnostic feedback.
