About the NC EOG

North Carolina's End-of-Grade (EOG) tests are the state's annual exams for grades 3 through 8 in math and reading. The math test measures student mastery of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for Mathematics, adopted by the State Board of Education in 2017. The current EOG math is administered online through NCTest, the state's testing platform. By state policy, EOG testing happens during the last 10 instructional days of the school year for each LEA - so the actual date depends on a district's calendar, but for traditional-calendar schools that usually places the math EOG in May or early June.

Scores are reported on a five-level achievement scale. Levels 1 and 2 indicate the student is not yet proficient on grade-level standards; Level 3 means the student is grade-level proficient (meeting state expectations) but may not yet be on track for college and career; Levels 4 and 5 indicate the student is on track to be college- and career-ready by the end of high school. Each report includes the overall scale score, the achievement level, and sub-scores by NCSCOS domain, so parents can see whether their child is stronger on number and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, or statistics.
