MCAP Math Practice
Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program. MCAP is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for math, which Briveli covers comprehensively.
Spring 2026: April 6, 2026 - May 29, 2026 for grades 3-8 math and ELA.
Computer-based
In grades 3-7, a four-function calculator with percent and square root is allowed on calculator-active math items. In grade 8, a scientific calculator is allowed on calculator-active items. Calculator-inactive sections do not allow any calculator.
Scale score reported in four performance levels: Level 1 (Beginning Learner), Level 2 (Developing Learner), Level 3 (Proficient Learner), and Level 4 (Distinguished Learner). Level 3 is on grade level.
About the MCAP
MCAP, the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program, is the state's annual test for grades 3 through 8 in mathematics and English language arts. The math assessment is built on the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards, which are the state's adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Students take MCAP online over multiple sessions during a wide spring window. For 2025-2026 the testing window runs from April 6, 2026 through May 29, 2026, and individual districts choose their own dates inside that window. Items are a mix of selected-response, equation-builder, drag-and-drop, and short constructed-response problems that ask students to show or explain their work.
Maryland reports MCAP math scores on a four-level scale: Beginning, Developing, Proficient, and Distinguished. Proficient is the on-grade-level expectation. Each student's report includes a scale score, the performance level, and sub-scores by major reporting category - such as Major Content, Additional and Supporting Content, Mathematical Reasoning, and Modeling and Application - so families can see whether their child is stronger on procedural fluency or on reasoning and problem-solving. Calculators are allowed only on the calculator-active portion of the test, with a four-function calculator in grades 3-7 and a scientific calculator in grade 8.
