About the KSA

The Kentucky Summative Assessment, or KSA, is the state's annual math test for grades 3-8. KSA replaced K-PREP starting in the 2021-22 school year and is built around the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics, a state framework that descends from Common Core but with Kentucky-specific clarifications. Math reporting categories follow the Common Core domains - Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations, Fractions, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, Functions, and Statistics and Probability - so Common Core practice on Briveli translates cleanly to KSA preparation.

Kentucky administers KSA online through the state's testing platform, with technology-enhanced items alongside multiple-choice, multi-select, equation-editor, and short-answer formats. Math is given as one untimed session per grade, and most students finish in 60-90 minutes. The Kentucky Department of Education publishes annual released items and a Test Design and Administration manual that specifies how many items appear from each domain. Briveli's grade-level practice paths mirror that emphasis so families do not have to guess where to spend prep time.

Score reports return one of four performance levels and a scale score, plus subscores by reporting category. Proficient or Distinguished is the on-track benchmark, and KSA results feed Kentucky's school accountability index. Because Kentucky is one of the states that uses the four-tier Novice/Apprentice/Proficient/Distinguished labels rather than Common Core's typical 1-4 scale, parents new to KSA sometimes find score reports confusing - the order from lowest to highest is Novice, Apprentice, Proficient, Distinguished.
