About the DC CAPE

DC CAPE - the District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessments of Progress in Education - is the District's annual statewide test in English language arts and mathematics. In math, students in grades 3 through 8 take a computer-based assessment built on the Common Core State Standards. The 2025-2026 testing window opens in February and closes in mid- to late March for most LEAs, with charter networks given some flexibility to extend later. Each local education agency picks its own testing days inside that window. The current DC CAPE design is the same one DC has used for several years, although OSSE has announced a new DC CAPE 2.0 that will launch in spring 2027.

Math results are reported on a 650-850 scale score and converted into one of five performance levels. Performance Levels 4 and 5 indicate the student is meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations and is on track for college and career readiness; Level 3 students are approaching expectations. Score reports show overall performance plus breakdowns by major reporting category, so parents can see whether their child is stronger or weaker in areas like operations and algebraic thinking, fractions, ratios, expressions and equations, or statistics. Reports are released over the summer through the OSSE family portal and through the school.
