About the AK STAR
Alaska replaced PEAKS with the AK STAR (Alaska System of Academic Readiness) in 2022 as a shorter, two-part assessment built around the Alaska English/Language Arts and Mathematics Standards rather than the Common Core. The math test is delivered online by NWEA and pairs a fixed-form summative module with the MAP Growth interim, giving districts both an accountability score and growth data from the same vendor in a single window. Schools receive a state proficiency designation plus MAP Growth RIT scores, which districts use for instructional planning across the school year.
AK STAR mathematics is administered to students in grades 3 through 9 each spring, typically across a four-week window in late March and April. The test is computer-delivered in fixed form (not adaptive on the summative side), runs roughly 60 to 90 minutes, and is scored on Alaska's four-tier scale: Needs Support, Approaching Proficient, Proficient, and Advanced. Results are returned to families in a parent report that pairs the proficiency level with the MAP Growth percentile, so families see how their child compares to Alaska peers and to the national NWEA norming sample.
