About Investigations in Number, Data, and Space
Investigations in Number, Data, and Space is a K-5 elementary mathematics curriculum developed at TERC and published by Pearson (Savvas). The current edition, Investigations 3, is fully aligned to Common Core. The program is famous for its inquiry pedagogy: students investigate rich tasks, develop their own strategies, and then compare and refine them in class discussion. Each grade is divided into eight or nine Units, and Units are made up of multi-day Investigations rather than single-day lessons.
Investigations puts heavy emphasis on data, number sense, and geometry — historically more time on data than most elementary curricula. Districts that have stayed with Investigations across reform cycles tend to value its student-centered orientation. Briveli supplements Investigations with topic-focused practice when families need additional fluency reinforcement, especially around multiplication facts and fraction operations where Investigations' open-ended approach sometimes leaves room for more drill at home.
