About Illustrative Mathematics
Illustrative Mathematics, often called IM, is a problem-based, openly licensed K-12 mathematics curriculum. The 6-8 program was the original release and remains widely respected; the K-5 program was developed in collaboration with Kendall Hunt. Districts can use the OER versions for free or purchase enhanced editions from partners like Kendall Hunt, McGraw-Hill, and Imagine Learning. Each grade is divided into eight or nine Units, and Units consist of carefully sequenced Lessons that begin with a problem-based Warm-Up, an instructional Task, and a synthesis discussion.
IM is grounded in the belief that students learn mathematics by working on rich tasks, sharing reasoning, and revising thinking. The curriculum is highly regarded by EdReports and is a default choice for districts switching from a more procedural program. Briveli mirrors the IM Unit structure across K-8 so families can find practice that complements the lesson their child completed at school, especially in fractions, ratios, expressions, and proportional relationships where IM's discussions move quickly.
