What is multiplication facts?
Multiplication facts are the answers to single-digit multiplication problems — every product from 0 × 0 up to 9 × 9 (or 12 × 12 in older textbooks). Kids work toward knowing these by heart so they can do bigger math without stopping to count.
Why it matters
Multiplication facts are the bridge between addition and almost everything else: long multiplication, division, fractions, area, and algebra. Kids who haven’t memorized them stall on harder math because the working memory is busy doing 7 × 8 instead of solving the actual problem.

What is 7 × 8?

Think of 7 × 8 as "seven groups of eight" — or, swap it, "eight groups of seven."
Multiplication is commutative: 7 × 8 = 8 × 7. Use whichever feels easier.

If you know 7 × 7 = 49, add one more 7: 49 + 7 = 56.
This "near-fact" strategy lets you derive harder facts from ones you already know.

Or: think 5 × 8 = 40 (an easy fact), then add two more 8s: 40 + 16 = 56.
Breaking a fact into a friendly chunk plus the rest is called the "distributive" strategy.

Common mistakes
- •Skip-counting from 1 every time instead of starting from a known fact (treating multiplication like repeated counting forever).
- •Confusing 6 × 7 with 6 × 8 — close facts get mixed up under time pressure.
- •Memorizing without understanding — fast at flashcards but lost when the problem looks different ("If a box has 6 rows of 7 apples...").
- •Skipping the harder facts (6×7, 6×8, 7×8, 8×9) because the smaller ones come quickly first.
